History of HPL
Built for the Richard S. Willis family in 1854. Hodge Podge Lodge was originally called "Melrose" in memory of an estate owned by his ancestors in Scotland. The home started as a four room, story and a half house with a detached kitchen. Throughout the house, one can trace the outline of the original footprint by noticing the wide plank flooring in the parlor, formal dining room and library. During the civil war era the massive lawn, with huge oak and pecan trees, quickly became a favorite place for many young people in town for picnics and family gatherings. It is on these same grounds that we invite you and your loved ones to celebrate life’s memorable occasions.
The HISTORY on Hodge Podge Lodge
Throughout the years this house has had many names and owners but has continually been a gathering place for residents and visitors of Montgomery, Texas.
Built in 1854 for Richard S. Willis, Melrose house was a depiction of how the wealthy class lived during the Civil War. With its wide plank flooring (some of which can still be found in the house today), four bedrooms, and story and a half structure, it was one of the most prominent houses in Montgomery. During the Civil War when housing became scarce Melrose opened its doors to those needing shelter. Many young couples also found their way to the vast well-manicured grounds for picnics and social gatherings.
The home’s second name was “The Old Irion Place” while Dr. John L. Irion, a surgeon of the Confederate Army, took up residence. It’s rumored that during his ownership of the house Sam Houston spent a few days visiting and that quite a few soldiers mended their battle wounds here.
During the 1960’s ownership of the house came to the Waldrop family who renamed the house “Cathalorri” for their two granddaughters. During their time here they worked to restore the outside structure of the home and saw the house receive its historical marker in 1966.
After that the Menefee’s bought the house and worked towards bringing the interior of the house back to life.
In 2012, the Weems’ opened the doors once again to the public as Hodge Podge Lodge, a gathering place for weddings and events as well as a bed and breakfast. HPL’s old world brick courtyard, round patio, and pavilion were added during their time as caretakers.
Ownership has now been passed on to Jeff and Mistie Angelo who, like the many that came before them, continue to preserve the history of the house while completing new additions. Since 2016 they have added a Redwood pergola, concrete aisle for the brides, a photo lounge, and renovated the open-air pavilion into a “Glass Garden”. The Eatery, a five-star restaurant was launched in 2018 offering unique dining experiences, a full lounge, “Sip’s” and gourmet on and off-site catering.
In 2021, the new bridal suite was added in the historic main house. This new space, Suite Serenity, promises to be an eclectic and inviting space for bride for years to come!
